Câu hỏi: Được biết, My đã tham gia một số trại hè trong nước và cả quốc tế, động lực nào để em tham gia những trại hè khoa học, trại hè nghiên cứu?

Em vừa tham gia một workshop nội bộ của tổ chức em đang làm việc. Còn trại hè đầu tiên em tham gia là tại Thái Lan và từ hồi em còn là sinh viên. Động lực em đăng ký tham gia những trại hè này chính là đam mê nghiên cứu và học hỏi. Em biết đến trại hè này từ 2013, nhưng em muốn thực sự hiểu và đóng góp cho chương trình trại hè nên đã tìm hiểu trại hè  từ các alumni của trại hè. Năm 2013, 2014 em tìm hiểu các thông tin và đến năm 2015 em mới quyết định apply tham gia trại hè.

Bên cạnh đó, khi còn là sinh viên em cũng thường xuyên tham gia các hoạt động hội thảo quốc tế về vấn đề môi trường, tham gia làm tình nguyện viên tại các sự kiện, hội thảo khoa học của trường, học hỏi các thầy cô. Em thường ưu tiên tham gia các hoạt động liên quan đến vấn đề/lĩnh vực nghiên cứu mà em quan tâm. Còn khi tham gia trại hè, động lực của em là về chuyên môn, em mong muốn sẽ gặp được những người bạn mới, được mở rộng tư duy, phát triển những ý tưởng mới. Em cũng hi vọng  biết thêm cách tiếp cận thông tin, học hỏi kinh nghiệm của các bạn để có thể áp dụng cho nghiên cứu ở Việt Nam.

Sau trại hè, network vẫn được duy trì, có rất nhiều người làm nghiên cứu, làm các môi trường công việc khác nhau, đối với em thì điều quan trọng sau trại hè là kỹ năng định hướng nghề nghiệp, và sự cởi mở với tri thức, với công việc.

Câu hỏi: Khi em tham gia trại hè em có cảm thấy lo lắng hay có “nỗi sợ” nào không?

Khi em tham gia trại hè là lúc em 25 tuổi, khi đó em còn là sinh viên và tham gia rất nhiều các hoạt động về học thuật. Trại hè Intership diễn ra trong vòng 1 tháng, và các bạn rất nhanh khi đưa ra các ý tưởng, nghĩ và làm liền, và khi làm xong thì ra kết quả luôn. Đây là điều em thấy có 1 chút lo lắng nhưng cũng học hỏi được rất nhiều.

Câu hỏi: Theo em thì để tạo ra sự kết nối lâu dài hơn sau một trại hè, từ phía BTC cần đảm bảo những điều gì? Em có thể chia sẻ từ kinh nghiệm trại hè mà em trải nghiệm?

Trại hè được USAID tài trợ và đến năm 2016 có một workshop dành riêng cho học viên của trại hè, ở đó, các bạn trình bày ý tưởng dự án/nghiên cứu mà các bạn đã làm được sau trại hè, chia sẻ kinh nghiệm. Trong dự án cũng có Grant 3 năm 1 lần và tổ chức tại Philippines. Trong workshop này, BTC cũng mời rất nhiều người nổi tiếng để làm mentors. Mặc dù hiện nay, cán bộ phụ trách của cơ quan tài trợ cũng đã thay đổi nhưng các bạn học viên vẫn giữ keep contact.

Theo em thì để có thể suy nghĩ về trại hè nhưng trong khuôn khổ dự án có nguồn tài trợ ổn định khoảng 5 năm. Bên cạnh đó, trại hè nên có một forum, một nền tảng online để giữ được contact của các học viên. Ngoài ra, trại hè cũng nên có những Small Grants để khích lệ sự quan tâm của học viên, giúp cho network mạnh hơn.

Câu hỏi: Vậy từ phía bản thân các học viên thì sao, My có thể chia sẻ làm cách nào mà các bạn học viên vẫn có thể duy trì kết nối sau trại hè?

Với các nhóm khác thì em không biết rõ lắm nhưng nhóm của em vẫn rất thân thiết. Chúng em vẫn theo dõi các thông tin của nhau, những hướng đi, nghề nghiệp, các dự án thông qua mạng xã hội. Bản thân em đã thay đổi từ định hướng sẽ đi học PhD sang tham gia các hoạt động của các tổ chức NGO sau trại hè. Bạn bè của em trong trại hè có những bạn đi theo con được học thuật, có những bạn làm các dự án như em….nhưng vẫn keep contact vì biết đâu ở một lúc nào đó, chúng em sẽ có thể kết hợp làm với nhau những điều gì đó chung chẳng hạn.

Câu hỏi: Sau trại hè, các bạn có dự án nào cùng với nhau hay không?

Em cùng hai bạn nữa ở Hà Nội tham gia trại hè và sau đó các bạn có dự án Green Finger. Bản thân em rất quan tâm đến các vấn đề nghiên cứu về bảo tồn tri thức bản địa, môi trường tri thức, bản địa. Em không tham gia trực tiếp dự án nhưng cũng tham gia các buổi trao đổi, thảo luận với các bạn. Dự án nói về vấn đề tái chế rác thải. Em cảm nhận là trại hè như một chất xúc tác cho các ý tưởng và các hoạt động dự án.

Câu hỏi: Em có thấy sự khác biệt gì giữa thế hệ của em với các bạn Gen Z hiện nay không? Và em có cảm nhận gì về các bạn?

Trong tổ chức của em hiện nay cũng có rất nhiều các bạn trẻ sàn sàn tuổi của e, và em cảm nhận không có quá nhiều khác biệt. Một điều em muốn chia sẻ, là các bạn trẻ hiện nay có khả năng tự học rất tốt, đặc biệt là tự học trên Internet. Tuy nhiên thì có thể nhiều bạn chưa thực sự tìm được định hướng của mình. Khi học nhanh, và học quá tốt thì các bạn mong muốn thay đổi, nhảy sang cái khác. Theo em thì có lẽ các bạn có thể cho mình một cái deadline, stick vào một vấn đề gì đó trong 2 năm để mình học hỏi, trải nghiệm.

Câu hỏi: Từ kinh nghiệm của cá nhân em, My có thể chia sẻ gì với các bạn trẻ sinh viên đam mê nghiên cứu không?

Em nghĩ điều đầu tiên các bạn phải xác định được các bạn muốn cái gì.

Điều thứ hai là các bạn tập trung nghiên cứu về chủ đề gì.

Điều thứ ba là phải tự học, tự đào sâu.

Điều thứ tư là các bạn nên khai thác các nguồn sẵn có từ trường, từ các thầy cô. Khi em còn là sinh viên thì em xác định vấn đề mình quan tâm, thu hẹp phạm vi những vấn đề nghiên cứu thực sự trọng tâm, học hỏi qua trải nghiệm và tham gia các hoạt động nghiên cứu, hội thảo với vai trò tình nguyện viên.

Điều thứ năm có lẽ là thái độ cởi mở với thông tin mới, cởi mở trong học tập và luôn nhớ work-life balance. Kinh nghiệm xương máu của em là học tất cả mọi thứ có thể, và enjoy – chơi và học song hành. Những người bạn từng chia sẻ với mình biết đâu có thể là các work partner trong tương lai mà hiện tại mình không thể biết được.

Câu hỏi: Được biết là công việc của em thường xuyên làm việc với những bạn trẻ trong lĩnh vực start-up, gắn với nông nghiệp. Em thấy các bạn trẻ làm việc trong lĩnh vực start-up nông nghiệp hiện nay còn gặp những khó khăn gì?

Các bạn đã làm trong các start-up, các mô hình hợp tác xã theo mô hình doanh nghiệp. Vấn đề là các bạn cũng gặp những khó khăn nhất định khi tiếng nói của các bạn chưa được lắng nghe bởi các cô bác nhiều tuổi. Khoảng cách thế hệ lớn có thể dẫn đến việc các bạn không được lắng nghe.

Điều thứ hai là khi các bạn đang theo một sản phẩm, các bạn có thể chạy theo một cái khác do nó “trend” hơn. Có lẽ các bạn phải biết doanh nghiệp, hợp tác xã có cái gì, từ đó tạo giá trị khác. Những khó khăn các bạn quan tâm nhất là vấn đề tiền, tìm kiếm các nguồn lực hỗ trợ từ bên ngoài, cần senior để hỗ trợ chuyên môn cho các bạn.

Câu hỏi: Em có chia sẻ là em hiện nay em chủ yếu tập trung vào các hoạt động khởi nghiệp, nhưng vẫn rất đam mê nghiên cứu , sắp tới em có dự án nào em triển khai mà có sự kết hợp cả những chủ thể là các bạn sinh viên yêu thích nghiên cứu và những bạn sinh viên trẻ yêu thích khởi nghiệp không?

Thực tế thì em rất thích và mong có thể có những hoạt động kết nối các bạn trẻ nghiên cứu và start-up. Hi vọng trong thời gian tới em có thể làm điều đó. Trong lĩnh vực nông nghiệp thì em đã từng hỗ trợ các hoạt động của các hợp tác xã (HTX Sinh dược..). Và em nghĩ rằng nên có những network của Việt Nam về những vấn đề này.

Câu hỏi: Đến thời điểm hiện tại, em cảm thấy hài lòng nhất với điều gì mà mình đã đạt được?

Năm 25 tuổi, em là một bạn sinh viên tò mò muốn tham gia trại hè như thế nào, mong muốn học hỏi, làm nghiên cứu. Khi tham gia trại hè, điều em học được là sự cởi mở, vì trước đây em đóng khung mình là chỉ làm nghiên cứu. Các bạn học của em đã giúp em thấy được rằng hãy học hỏi và take action, cái gì cũng làm và làm ngay. Những yếu tố tác động từ trại hè đã giúp em thay đổi định hướng của mình tập trung hơn, cởi mở hơn và em quyết định làm ở NGOs và không tiếp tục học PhD. Em tin rằng khi đón nhận tri thức một cách cởi mở, con đường sự nghiệp cũng sẽ cởi mở hơn. Công việc hiện tại của em là hỗ trợ cho các hợp tác xã trong lĩnh vực nông nghiệp và em cũng rất mong muốn đóng góp vào các hoạt động với giới trẻ, hỗ trợ các bạn nghiên cứu về các vấn đề môi trường.

Có lẽ 70-80% em cảm thấy mình đã đi đúng định hướng mà mình đặt ra. Còn 20-30% còn lại là niềm yêu thích với nghiên cứu thì vẫn còn ở trong em (Cười), nhưng hiện nay em chỉ tập trung được vào các mảng business, hỗ trợ start-up.

Câu hỏi: Chủ đề năm nay của trại hè SETY là Ước mơ của bạn về biển. Vậy My có yêu biển không và điều gì khiến em quan tâm hiện nay?

Ô nhiễm môi trường biển hiện nay rất nghiêm trọng và gắn với việc lượng rác thải sử dụng hàng ngày. Rác thải nhựa trên biển ảnh hưởng đến sinh vật biển, hệ sinh thái biển trong khi Việt Nam có ¾ diện tích là biển. Vấn đề ô nhiễm môi trường biển có thể ảnh hưởng xấu đến hệ sinh thái, đến con người. Ước mơ của em về biển là Biển sẽ sạch hơn.

Điều em quan tâm đó là hiện tượng băng tan ở Bắc cực – một hệ lụy từ rác thải trên biển, biến đổi khí hậu do rác thải. Gấu Bắc cực và các loại sinh vật khác cũng bị ảnh hưởng. Và hệ lụy lớn hơn chính là những ảnh hưởng đến vấn đề an ninh lương thực trên toàn cầu.

Câu hỏi: My có thể gửi một lời chúc khích lệ với các bạn sinh viên của trại hè SETY 2023 năm nay không?

The organizers of SETY Science Summer Camp (Social – Ecological Transformation and Youth) with the theme “Your Dreams for the Marine Environment in the Context of Social-Ecological Transition” would like to send warm greetings to Ms.Tra My!

In order to inspire and spread the passion for scientific research and the implementation of projects to enhance the role of women in scientific research and community development for sustainable development goals, we would greatly appreciate any insights or sharing from you!

Question: It is known that you have participated in some domestic and international summer camps. What motivates you to participate in these scientific and research summer camps?

I recently attended an internal workshop at my organization. The first summer camp I participated in was in Thailand when I was still a student. My motivation to join these summer camps is driven by my passion for research and learning. I became aware of this summer camp in 2013, but I wanted to truly understand and contribute to the program, so I researched the camp through alumni. In 2013 and 2014, I gathered information, and it was in 2015 that I made the decision to apply and participate in the summer camp. In addition, as a student, I also frequently participated in international environmental conferences, volunteered at events, and attended scientific seminars at my university, learning from professors and colleagues. I usually prioritize participating in activities related to the research field that I am interested in. When joining summer camps, my motivation is focused on professional development. I hope to meet new friends, expand my mindset, and develop new ideas. I also hope to learn about different approaches to information and gain insights from my peers that I can apply to research in Vietnam. After the summer camp, the network is still maintained, and there are many people involved in research and various environmental work. For me, the important aspect after the summer camp is gaining career direction skills and being open-minded towards knowledge and work.

Question: Did you feel any worries or fears when participating in the summer camp?

When I joined the summer camp, I was 25 years old and still a student, actively participating in various academic activities. The internship summer camp lasted for one month, and the participants were quick in generating ideas and taking immediate action. They were able to produce results efficiently. This aspect did make me feel a bit anxious, but I also learned a lot from it.

Question: In your opinion, what does the organizing committee need to ensure in order to create long-lasting connections after a summer camp? Can you share your experience from the summer camp you attended?

The summer camp I attended was sponsored by USAID, and in 2016, there was a dedicated workshop for the camp participants. During this workshop, we presented the project ideas/research that we had worked on after the summer camp and shared our experiences. The project also had a grant cycle of three years and was organized in the Philippines. In this workshop, the organizing committee invited renowned individuals as mentors. Although the responsible personnel from the funding agency may have changed, the participants of the camp still maintained contact. In my opinion, it is possible to think about the summer camp within the framework of a project with stable funding for about five years. Additionally, the summer camp should have a forum or an online platform to maintain contact among the participants. Furthermore, the summer camp should also have small grants to encourage the interest of the participants and strengthen the network.

Question: So, from the perspective of the participants themselves, can you share how the participants can maintain connections after the summer camp?

I don’t know the other groups very well, but my group is still very close. We continue to follow each other’s updates, directions, careers and projects through social media. Personally, I have changed my career direction from pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy to engaging in activities with NGOs after the summer camp. My friends from the summer camp have also taken different paths – some have pursued academic careers, while others are working on projects like me. However, we still keep in contact because maybe at some point we might have the opportunity to collaborate on something together in the future.

Question: After the summer camp, did the participants have any projects together?

I and two other friends from Hanoi participated in the summer camp, and afterwards, those two friends started the Green Finger project. Personally, I am very interested in researching indigenous knowledge conservation, environmental knowledge, and local knowledge. Although I did not directly participate in the project, I joined in the discussions and exchanges with them. The project focuses on the issue of waste recycling. I feel that the summer camp served as a catalyst for ideas and project activities.

Question: Do you see any differences between your generation and the current Gen Z? And what are your impressions of them?

In my organization, there are many young people who are around my age, and I don’t see too many differences. One thing I want to share is that the current young generation has a great ability to self-learn, especially through the internet. However, it is possible that many of them have not yet found their own direction, so when they learn quickly and excel, they desire to change and move on to something else. In my opinion, perhaps they should set themselves a deadline and stick to a certain issue for two years to learn and experience.

Question: From your personal experience, can you share some advice with young students who have a passion for research?

I think the first thing for students is to determine what they want.

The second thing is to focus on researching a specific topic.

The third thing is to self-learn and delve deeper into the subject.

The fourth thing is to explore available knowledge sources from the university and from professors. When I was a student, I identified the issues I was interested in and narrowed down the scope of my research to what truly mattered. I learned through experiences and participated in research activities and conferences as a volunteer.

The fifth thing is perhaps to have an open-minded attitude towards new information, be open to learning, and always remember to maintain a work-life balance. My personal experience is to learn everything possible and enjoy it – to play and learn side by side. The people who have shared experiences with you could potentially become your future work partners, which you may not be aware of at present.

Question: It is known that you frequently work with young people in the agriculture-related startup field. What difficulties do young people working in agriculture startups face nowadays?

Those who work in startups or cooperative models within the business framework face certain difficulties when their voices are not listened to by older generations. Large generation gaps can lead to a lack of understanding and attention to their ideas and perspectives.

Secondly, while working on a product, they may be tempted to and follow another which is more trendy. Perhaps young people need to understand what a business or cooperative model has, from that creating different value propositions. The difficulties they are most concerned about are money issues, finding outside support resources, and needing a senior for professional support.

Question: You shared that you are currently focusing mainly on entrepreneurial activities, but you are still passionate about research. Do you have any upcoming projects that combine both research enthusiasts and young entrepreneurial students?

In reality, I really like and hope to have activities that connect young researchers and entrepreneurs. I hope to be able to do that in the near future. In the field of agriculture, I have previously supported activities of cooperatives (Biopharmaceutical Cooperative). And I think that there should be networks in Vietnam that focus on these issues.

Question: Up until now, what achievement are you most satisfied with?

At the age of 25, as a curious student, I wanted to participate in summer camps to learn and conduct research. When I joined the summer camp, I learned the importance of being open-minded because I used to confine myself to research only. My fellow participants helped me realize that I should learn, take action, and do things immediately. The impactful elements from the summer camp helped me change my direction, become more focused, and open-minded. As a result, I decided to work in NGOs instead of pursuing a PhD. I believe that by embracing knowledge with an open mind, one’s career path becomes more open as well. Currently, my work involves supporting cooperatives in the agricultural sector, and I also aspire to contribute to activities involving young people and supporting them research on environmental issues. Perhaps I feel about 70-80% satisfied with the direction I have set for myself. The remaining 20-30% is still my passion for research (laughing), but currently, I can only focus on business areas and supporting startups.

Question: This year’s theme of SETY summer camp is “Your Dream about the Ocean.” Do you love the ocean and what concerns you currently?

The pollution of the marine environment is a serious issue, closely related to the daily waste production. Plastic waste in the ocean affects marine organisms and the marine ecosystem, while Vietnam has three-quarters of its territory as the ocean. Marine pollution can have a detrimental impact on the ecosystem and humans. My dream for the ocean is for it to be cleaner. One thing that concerns me is the phenomenon of Arctic ice melting, a consequence of waste in the ocean and climate change caused by waste. Polar bears and other species are also affected. And the larger implication is the impact on global food security.

Question: Can you send a wish of encouragement to the students of SETY 2023 summer camp?

I wish you all: Be open-minded to learn, but learn in a direct way (^^)!!
