This article will directly explore this central question: Does the pursuit of sustainability necessarily mean sacrificing personal convenience? We will analyze and argue that \u201cgreen living\u201d and \u201cconvenience\u201d are not two opposing concepts, but can completely coexist and develop through new approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the common misconceptions about green living is that it means sacrificing comfort and convenience in life. However, the reality is that green living does not mean living in poverty but rather choosing smarter, more efficient and more environmentally friendly ways of living. Many technological advances have proven that sustainable living can go hand in hand with modern conveniences. According to UNEP (2018), green living solutions today are designed to maintain a high quality of life while minimizing ecological impact. According to the IRENA report (2022), solar energy is the fastest growing renewable source globally, contributing to 65% of the total growth in renewable energy capacity in 2022, with about 192 GW newly installed. This increase reflects a clear trend in the global market towards prioritizing clean and distributed energy. In Vietnam, according to data from EVN (as of October 31, 2021), the total solar power capacity reached about 16,420 MW, of which rooftop solar power accounted for nearly 7,755 MW. This shows that, in just a short period of time, households and businesses have quickly adopted clean technology to generate and use electricity directly, thereby reducing costs and supporting the national grid. One of the biggest barriers to many people adopting a green lifestyle is the misconception that it requires giving up modern conveniences and hassles. Common misconceptions include that sustainable products are more expensive, less efficient, and that green living is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Going green does not mean living in poverty or deprivation. Instead, it is about finding smarter and more efficient alternatives to enjoy life without harming the environment. Going green is not about giving up conveniences, but about updating, innovating, and upgrading those conveniences to be more sustainable.<\/em>
In fact, green services are increasingly diverse, popular, and associated with increasingly convenient digital technology.
2.1. Green transportation – Convenient travel, no pollution worries<\/strong>:
Green transport is an important part of the transition to a green lifestyle in Vietnam, as the transport sector is one of the main sources of pollution in the country. Millions of personal vehicles, especially motorbikes, operating every day emit a large amount of toxic emissions, seriously affecting air quality in large cities, people’s health and the country’s efforts to combat climate change. According to the Ministry of Transport (2021), the transport sector accounts for about 20% of Vietnam’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Transport vehicles, especially motorbikes and old cars, are the main source of pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10 and other toxic gases. According to the General Department of Environment (2020), PM2.5 dust concentrations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City regularly exceed the World Health Organization (WHO)’s permissible levels, mainly due to traffic activities. With approximately 45 million motorbikes in circulation nationwide (2021 figures), Vietnam is one of the countries with the largest number of motorbikes in the world. Given this situation, switching to green transportation is not only an option but also an urgent requirement to protect the environment and public health.
Nowadays, thanks to the outstanding development of digital technology, green services are becoming more and more popular, bringing experiences that are not only sustainable but also extremely convenient.
Nowadays, electric car companies such as VinFast and Tesla have become popular. More specifically, ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Gojek have integrated the GrabCar Electric or Go Green Bike options, allowing users to easily choose environmentally friendly vehicles with just a few operations on the phone. Traveling by electric vehicle not only helps reduce emissions but also brings a smooth, quiet, noise-free experience. In addition, services such as TNGo or MOBIKE have made traveling by bicycle more modern than ever. You just need to scan the QR code via the application on your phone, unlock the bike and move. This system not only helps people exercise, reduce traffic congestion but is also an effective solution for short trips, minimizing air pollution in big cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through smart electrical systems, smart home devices allow users to control and manage all electrical devices remotely via their phones. For example, you can automatically turn on\/off lights, adjust the air conditioner temperature according to a schedule or according to a motion sensor. This helps optimize energy use, avoiding wasting electricity in the most effective way. According to a report from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the use of smart home devices can help reduce annual electricity consumption by up to 10-15% (EPA, 2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

From a living perspective, a smart home can utilize solar panels, storage batteries, and automatic controllers to adjust consumption according to the time, and even sell excess electricity back to EVN if the grid allows. Many households in the South and Central of Vietnam have benefited economically from selling electricity at subsidized prices under the Government’s FIT policy. By combining smart devices and on-site renewable energy sources, the modern home becomes a place that prioritizes comfort – while optimizing energy, reducing costs, and protecting the environment. This is the truest and most realistic definition of a green home – innovative, efficient, and sustainable.
Scientists have developed many models of smart homes integrating renewable energy, notably the model of Jongbae Kim et al. (annotated image below), developing a smart home model integrating a lightweight renewable energy system, in which the main components include: solar panels (PV), energy storage (battery), smart electricity meters, DC\/AC inverters, and household electrical appliances such as air conditioners, lighting, TVs, and electric vehicles (EVs). These devices are connected via Dynamic Home Area Networks (DHANs), using communication technologies such as Bluetooth, ZigBee, and Wi-Fi, and exploiting the user’s mobile device as a “nomadic agent” to replace traditional fixed network ports. This system allows users to monitor and control energy consumption in real time, flexibly choose between grid power and solar power, and learn user behavior to optimize consumption efficiency. The outstanding advantages of the model are reduced installation costs, increased flexibility and scalability, improved compatibility between devices, and optimized power consumption based on usage context, contributing to the realization of a “greener”, more sustainable and smarter living space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
