Green technology – a concept that refers to technologies that are environmentally friendly and help minimize negative impacts on nature – has been playing an important role in this effort. Green technology solutions not only help reduce pollution but also promote ecosystem restoration, creating a cleaner and more sustainable living environment for humans.

Green technology helps reduce environmental pollution through the application of efficient energy production and consumption solutions. According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), switching to renewable energy could reduce CO2 emissions from the energy sector by more than 70% by 2050. Energy sources such as solar, wind and hydropower are not only sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels, but also help reduce the impact of air pollution, one of the main causes of respiratory diseases and other serious health problems. Many countries have used renewable energy to apply solar energy to production. Many countries in the world have applied renewable energy to the industrial sector , typically Germany and China, which have invested heavily in solar power systems. In Germany, by 2022, solar energy will account for about 10% of the country’s total electricity production, helping to reduce millions of tons of CO2 each year. In Vietnam, the solar power development program has also helped reduce about 1.5 million tons of CO2 since 2018.

In China, the land restoration project has used biotechnology to restore more than 1 million hectares of desert land. Thanks to these projects, some places have improved soil fertility and reduced desertification, while creating livelihoods for millions of local people. This project is considered one of the most effective land restoration models, while creating fertile land for agricultural cultivation, helping to convert more than 1 million hectares of desert land into agricultural land, providing food for millions of people and reducing sand blowing that causes air pollution.

In addition to reducing pollution, green technology also contributes to restoring degraded ecosystems. One of the outstanding technological solutions in this field is the use of biotechnology and soil restoration techniques. Modern biotechnologies such as microbial culture to treat soil and water pollution are becoming increasingly popular. According to research by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), using microorganisms in wastewater treatment can help remove up to 95% of pollutants, including heavy metals and organic matter. The city of Amsterdam (Netherlands) has implemented this model with the support of advanced technology. In the city’s circular economy program, more than 50% of Amsterdam’s waste is recycled, converted into reusable materials in other industries. The city also applies advanced technology in waste collection and treatment, such as automatic waste sorting systems and advanced plastic recycling technology, helping to reduce pollution and effectively reuse resources.

An important factor in the application of green technology is the circular economy model. This model encourages the application of green technology in production, in order to optimize the process, bring high efficiency, and at the same time save valuable resources. The concept of Circular Economy (CEE) was first officially used by Pearce and Turner (1990). It is used to refer to a new economic model based on the fundamental principle that “everything is an input to something else”, which is completely different from the traditional linear economic view. Ellen MacArthur Foundation describes the CEE as an industrial system that is restorative or regenerative by intention and design. It moves to renewable energy, eliminates the use of toxic chemicals and waste that reduces the possibility of reuse through superior design of materials, products, systems and, within this scope, business models. Or simply put, the Circular Economy is turning the output waste of one industry into an input resource of another industry or circulating within a business itself. The Circular Economy partly contributes to increasing value for businesses, reducing resource exploitation, reducing waste treatment costs, and minimizing environmental pollution.

This green economic model has been applied by many countries in the world in many different manufacturing industries, bringing good efficiency in both economy and ecosystem. The model with its strengths in reusing , recycling and aiming to minimize resource waste has brought economic efficiency to many countries in the world . According to a study by Harvard University, if all major countries in the world switch to a circular economic model, this model can help reduce about 9 billion tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to 40% of current global emissions. Realizing the great benefits of the circular economy, Vietnam is one of the first countries in the ASEAN region to include the circular economy in the Law on Environmental Protection and guiding documents under the law. On June 7, 2022, the Prime Minister approved Decision No. 687/QD-TTg on the Circular Economy Development Project in Vietnam and then many other documents on circular economy development.

One of the most obvious benefits of green technology is its ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Switching to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and biomass instead of fossil fuels such as coal and oil has significantly reduced CO2 and other pollutants. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the deployment of renewable energy technologies could reduce CO2 emissions in the energy sector by up to 70% by 2050. This not only helps protect the atmosphere, but also reduces air pollution, reducing pollution-related health problems such as respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and lung cancer.

Green technology does not only impact the air but also helps improve water and soil quality. Biotechnologies such as the use of microorganisms to treat water and soil pollution are good examples of how technology can help restore natural resources. Using these microorganisms to break down organic waste and heavy metals helps improve water quality in rivers, lakes and groundwater. According to research by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), biotechnology can help remove up to 95% of pollutants in water, and restore soils contaminated by chemicals and industrial waste, thereby helping to regenerate ecosystems and protect biodiversity. Air pollution, especially the presence of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and harmful gases such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), can cause a variety of serious health problems, from respiratory diseases to cardiovascular diseases and cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution causes about 7 million deaths each year, mainly in urban areas and developed countries. By reducing dependence on fossil fuels, green technology helps reduce these pollution levels, thereby improving air quality and reducing the incidence of pollution-related diseases. Switching to clean energy and using energy-efficient technologies helps create a healthier living environment for communities.

Green technology, especially in the circular economy model, helps reduce the amount of waste produced each year and increase the ability to recycle materials. Advanced recycling technologies not only reduce pollution but also create new products from reusable materials. For example, plastic and metal recycling technology has helped many large cities such as Amsterdam recycle more than 50% of their waste, turning waste into valuable raw materials for other industries. This reduces pollution from landfills, saves natural resources and reduces production costs.

One of the biggest advantages of green technology is the ability to create clean and sustainable energy sources that do not pollute the environment. The application of solar, wind and hydroelectric power technology helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels and reduce pollution from thermal power plants. The sun and wind are inexhaustible sources of energy and do not harm the environment. The International Energy Agency has reported that investment in renewable energy has helped reduce 2.1 billion tons of CO2 globally in 2021. Renewable energy sources are environmentally friendly solutions that are both highly efficient; help reduce pollution and create a sustainable energy economy, helping to protect and restore natural resources.

The application of green technology in ecological transformation not only helps reduce pollution but also contributes to environmental restoration and towards a sustainable economy. Solutions such as the use of renewable energy, biotechnology and circular economic models are becoming the main trends in solving global environmental problems. Green technology is becoming a new trend that many countries are interested in and aiming for in the long term. Green technology is truly reshaping the economy and environment around the world. The significant changes that green technology brings not only have a positive impact on the environment but also promise potential for economic growth, attract foreign direct investment and support sustainable production. However, along with the many opportunities that green technology brings are great challenges, for example, many fields are thirsty for high-quality human resources. Therefore, the successful application of green technology in Vietnam requires a lot of in-depth research, orientation, effective strategies and a lot of effort.

References:

Bouckaert, S., Pales, A.F., McGlade, C., Remme, U., Wanner, B., Varro, L., … & Spencer, T.
