This is also a method that can express the amount of resources consumed by humans. Since it was first introduced in 1993 by William Rees, the “Ecological Footprint” has been designed to assess human impact on the environment, while it also allows analysts to determine how fast humans are moving in consuming resources and creating waste.

The “Ecological Footprint” method determines two parts: ecological reserves (biological productivity space) and human’s demands. Accordingly, ecological reserves are calculated for six types of yields:

Cropland: is the area used for farming to collect food, animal feed and cotton fiber, including 70 types of primary area and 15 types of secondary area.

Grazing land: is an area used to raise animals for meat, leather, wool and milk, including natural and semi-natural pastures.

Forest: includes natural forests and planted forests to collect fuelwood and round wood.

Aquatic water surface: is the area providing freshwater and seawater aquatic products, including 8 types of fish, aquatic animals and 1 type of aquatic plant.

Construction land: the area used to build infrastructure: houses, industrial parks, power plants,…

Energy land or “carbon land”: is the area of land or ocean needed to absorb CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion.

(Source: https://www.footprintnetwork.org/)

According to Tiezzi et al. (2015), the calculating method “ Ecological Footprint” is as follows:

EF = ΣTi/Yw x EQFi

In there:

EF: is Ecological Footprint

Ti: is the annual consumption (in tons) of product i of a country

Yw: is the world average output of product i

EQFi: is the equivalent coefficient of product i.

To calculate supply, the Ecological Footprint aggregates the total biological capacity available, including any land and sea areas, forest lands, croplands, fishing areas, and any land on which construction has been completed. At the individual level, the Ecological Footprint determines the quantity consumed and the durability of the products produced. Ecological Footprint plays a very important role in helping organizations and countries determine the amount of productive land available to them.

The biological capacity of each individual is calculated based on the available productive area (in hectares), the productivity of each area, and the number of people sharing that area. However, if a population’s Ecological Footprint exceeds the bio-capacity to serve that population, then the area is at risk of experiencing a bio-capacity deficit or an ecological deficit.

Simply put, demand for goods and services exceeds the rate at which the region’s ecosystems can regenerate. In this case, a region may consider serving demand by importing goods, over-consuming its ecological assets, or engaging in activities that harm the environment in different ways.

Without assessing ecological footprints, governments and organizations may find it difficult to monitor the consumption of ecological resources and take steps toward a sustainable future.

Reference source:

Global Footprint Network, Ecological Footprint, https://www.footprintnetwork.org/our-work/ecological-footprint/ (accessed on: April 30th, 2024)

Fu, W., Turner, J.
